Introducing The New Drench MATTE Shower Screen Collection

With Christmas on the horizon, what better time to unwrap a few early presents? Our latest treat comes in the shape of a brand new range of coloured shower screens: the Drench MATTE collection, boasting four stylish ranges of fixed shower screens in a wide choice of matte colours.

All four shower screens boast their own unique style and character, from the oriental look of Suzhou to the eye-catching geometry of Hexagon. In this article, we take an in-depth look at each one of these fabulous ranges and explain the many different options at your fingertips.

Which styles are available?

All Drench MATTE fixed panel shower screens boast a singular design in high quality materials and finishes. Fans of minimalist design will love the Border range. It looks exactly as the name suggests, with an elegant slim outer metal frame to keep things simple. The Suzhou range, meanwhile, draws from traditional Japanese room dividing screens, adding an exotic flavour to your bathroom.

There’s also the Frame Lite range, an updated version of Drench’s classic Frame range inspired by industrial Crittall style windows. Last, but not least, is the dazzling Hexagon range, boasting a hexagonal frame feature quite unlike anything in our Drench collection. All four ranges come with optional support bars in a matching colour and finish, available at an extra cost.

What colours are available?

The MATTE shower screens collection is available in 12 standard matte colours. These include bold colours such as Lemon Yellow, Tangerine and Pale Pink, ideal for homeowners looking to make a splash. More discreet options include Graphite Grey, Forest and Latte. All MATTE shower frames are powder coated, ensuring a luxury matte finish worthy of the luxurious designs.

What’s more, the Border range is available in a choice of 6 metallic finishes inspired by on-trend brassware and modern taps. These brushed anodised finishes ensure a gorgeous industrial sheen that doesn’t corrode over time. Take your pick from steel, brass, chrome and bronze effects with stunning light and dark textures.

What makes the glass special?

Suzhou shower screen with frosted glass by Drench

Drench shower screens are renowned for their virtually indestructible glass panels. The new MATTE range is no different, with 8mm toughened safety glass as standard. Drench have coated each glass panel with “Enduro Shield”, a quality chemical coating that reduces the build-up of calcium oil and soap deposits.

All MATTE shower screens come with clear glass at the basic price. However, if you’re looking for something a little different, there are extra options available. Room H2o customers can upgrade their order with fluted, frosted or grey tinted glass – each adding 30% to the standard cost.

How much does the Drench MATTE collection cost?

This very much depends on which range you choose, as well as the width of your screen. The Border range starts from £662.50 at 700mm, rising to £839.00 for the 1200mm screen. The Hexagon range starts at £959.88 for the 700mm wide screen, with the 1200mm version rising to £1,447.50. The full list of prices can be found on each product page.

How long does delivery take?

Drench’s MATTE shower screens are available to order now via our website. The rough lead time for all MATTE products is 6 weeks, with mainland UK delivery as standard. Unfortunately, customers living in Scotland are not currently included in the delivery area.

We do not currently have any new MATTE shower screens on display in our Dorset showroom. However, we do have a black “Deco” shower screen with matching black taps and shower controls, plus a decorative fabric laminated glass screen.

Why choose Karndean wood and stone effect vinyl?

Vinyl plank flooring is becoming increasingly popular in bathroom design. With advances in digital printing, wood and stone effect vinyl is an amazingly realistic alternative to the real thing – offering practicality alongside style and versatility. Easy to look after and cost-effective, wood effect vinyl flooring is the perfect choice for busy households and works alongside any theme or style of décor.

Blonde oak effect vinyl flooring planks by Karndean

Thinner than real wood or tiles, Karndean luxury vinyl flooring is ideal for areas with different floor heights, and far warmer under foot than tiles – lovely for creating a cosy and welcoming ambience in the bathroom. They are also compatible with electric underfloor heating, unlike real wood. And, speaking of bathrooms and wet areas, Karndean vinyl is waterproof and highly durable, requires no sealing and means you can bring the warmth of wood into moist areas of the home where timber would not be suitable.

Karndean’s stone effect vinyl flooring is every bit as appealing as its wood effect counterpart. We offer a huge range of handcrafted stone effect tiles – all made with the very latest digital printing techniques – to give an inspiring natural stone look to your bathroom. As you’d expect from Karndean, the tiles in this collection are highly durable, easy to clean and compatible with underfloor heating. Popular styles include the Portland Stone tile with its pale clay tones and realistic granular surface finish, and the larger, smokey-grey Fumo tile. There’s also the Art Select range, which takes in marble, slate, limestone and travertine effect tiles in a variety of colours and finishes.

Karndean Knight Portland Stone effect vinyl flooring

If these benefits aren’t enough to convince you that bathroom vinyl floor tiles are the way to go, they are also exceptionally easy to look after. With no grout lines you don’t have to worry about dirt being trapped, and they are much quicker and easier to install than other bathroom floor tiles. What’s more, Karndean prices make luxury vinyl flooring accessible to everyone!

2019 Interior Design Trends

As we welcome in a new year, we also embrace a world of new interior design trends. In 2019, we’ll be seeing exciting developments in colours, styles, fixtures, fittings and gadgets. Here we take a look at the themes and innovations that are going to be emerging at the top of bathroom design trends over the coming months.

Destination: Luxury

Luxury freestanding bathtub with walk in shower

One of the hottest bathroom design trends for this year will be the ‘destination’ bath. Taking luxury to a whole new level, the freestanding bathtub is evolving into its own haven of tranquillity. With clever positioning and accessories, the destination bathtub turns bathing into a significant event.

Warm and welcoming

Light timber bathroom and large mirror

Bringing nature into the home has long been a popular interior design trend. While bathrooms can often feel cold and clinical, wood injects a sense of warmth and comfort. Wooden vanities and accessories aren’t a new idea, but this year’s designs will embrace reclaimed and light wood, with clear stains highlighting the beautiful detailing of the knots and grains.

The industrial vibe

Exposed gunmetal taps in industrial bathroom

Exposed hardware and piping are on-trend, with pewter and gunmetal tones giving fixtures texture and depth. Refined concrete has been drumming up a lot of interest at design shows, for a softer take on what can been seen as a cold and stark bathroom design trend.

“Exposed hardware and piping is coming into the bathroom in a very beautiful way. We used to see it a lot in older and antique homes, but it has come back in a more clean-lined and sleek way.”

Brady Tolbert, Creative Director at Emily Henderson Designs

Sleek showers

Inline black grid shower enclosure by Drench

When it comes to shower enclosures, it’s all about style and function for 2019’s must-have bathroom designs. Sitting perfectly within the industrial look and, in fact, any contemporary theme, is the grid design shower frame. Matte black grid showers, like those from the Drench FRAME range, will be sought-after. Giving a more modern, urban feel than plain glass, the grid shower brings a new dimension to the bathroom and made-to-measure options make this style accessible for any space.

Mediterranean inspiration

Mediterranean bathroom with wall hung WC pan

Tile trends will be drawing on influences from Moroccan and Spanish designs and colours, for both walls and floors. We’ll see creative feature walls and splashbacks, as well as stunning flooring designs used to create fabulous temples of indulgence.

“The Moroccan-patterned tile has been a popular choice for kitchen splashbacks and fireplace surrounds for years now. Increasingly, though, it’s showing up in large swathes as bathroom flooring. You get the feel of tile with all the colour and style of a bold rug.”

Houzz

Chic colours and patterns

Chocolate brown feature wall in modern bathroom

Colour will certainly be trending this year, with warm greys, blues, greens, dusky pinks and a subtler take on the classic black and white. But we’ll also see earthier tones, such as chocolate brown – a stylish option for those who prefer a more neutral palette. This year will see the continued popularity of patterned tiles, which may be reflective of 2019’s renewed focus on artisanship and craftsmanship. From tiles that catch the light to reveal a subtle pattern, to bold geometrics and intricate designs pieced together using a variety of colourful tiles.

Innovative technology

Smart shower controlled by mobile phone

Bathroom fixtures are evolving to offer far more than just practicality. ‘Smart showers’ allow you to see the exact temperature of the water, set various timings and flow types, and create personalised messages. And, as the perfect complement to the ‘destination’ bathtub mentioned earlier, we’ll even see electric fireplace inserts for the ultimate pampering experience.

Fabulous Fluted Glass Shower Screens From Drench

Fluted glass, also known as reeded glass, is making a real comeback in bathroom design. While the original style was popular back in the 70s, the modern take on fluted glass brings an effortless sense of sophistication when used for shower screens and bath screens, sitting stylishly within both traditional and contemporary settings.

We’re thrilled to be able to offer an exciting selection of fluted glass shower screens from the revolutionary Drench brand. As one of four finishes in the Drench range, fluted glass gives a sense of light and space and depth, with the practical benefits of privacy too.

Reeded glass offers many practical benefits, with privacy being just one. Using fluted glass on vanities is also a great way of displaying bathroom products, without fully revealing them.

Our Latest Bathroom Project In Studland, Dorset

We recently undertook a new bathroom and cloakroom project for customers in Dorset, as part of the renovation of their property. Mr and Mrs L purchased their property in Studland in April 2018, and the new bathroom and cloakroom were part of their on-going renovation of the house. At Room H20, we were thrilled to be asked to not only supply the furniture, fixtures and fittings, but also create the bathroom design. Our sister company, UK Tiles Direct, were also involved in the project, supplying and installing luxury Karndean flooring in the new bathroom and cloakroom.

Bathroom design technology

3D bathroom design for new project in Dorset

Our first task was to visit the property and assess the existing bathroom, in terms of space, and discuss with Mr and Mrs L what they envisaged from the bathroom design. Using our years of experience and the latest technology, we were able to create a detailed design proposal for our customers. Taking into account both style and functionality, we designed a new bathroom that perfectly utilised the space available, for a luxurious and highly practical room.

New bathroom fixtures and fittings

Woodstock Calypso fitted furniture with laminate beige worktop

In the main bathroom, we used Woodstock Calypso fitted furniture in Malvern White Ash, for a contemporary look, with a laminate beige stone worktop giving a chic finish. The large walk-in shower includes a Crosswater anti-slip tray and a showering package from Vado. The sleek fitted bathroom furniture is perfectly complemented by Waxman Dubai Pearl porcelain tiles. Following the same clean, modern look, we installed Roper Rhodes Plan 500 unit and basin in the cloakroom, along with Roper Rhodes Joy tap and Debut pan and the same porcelain tiles as the main bathroom walls.

Karndean luxury vinyl flooring

Bathroom cloakroom with Karndean wood effect vinyl flooring

The new cloakroom benefits from exceptionally stylish and durable wood effect vinyl flooring. The luxury Karndean flooring is an innovative and exceptionally high-quality alternative to ceramic, porcelain, stone or solid wood, making it the perfect choice for bathrooms. Digitally printed to replicate the beautiful effects of real wood, the textured surface offers authenticity with convenience and ease of care.

Bath Out, Shower In For Disability Bathroom Project

We were recently asked to replace a bath with a shower as part of the redesign of a customer’s bathroom in Bere Regis, Dorset. As an elderly and disabled lady, the client needed a bathroom that would offer ease of use and long-term convenience. By replacing the existing bath with a large shower, the design would work for the client now, and continue to meet her needs in the future.

Future-proofing with a walk-in shower

Replacing baths with large walk-in showers is becoming an increasingly popular choice for many people – not just the elderly or disabled. The convenience and practicality of replacing a bath with a shower gives a long-term solution for people looking to future-proof their homes, enabling them to remain independent as they get older. With the demand for these sorts of bathroom makeovers, manufacturers are now offering a wider range of large shower trays and doors with this type of project in mind. This opens up more opportunities to embrace style alongside functionality.

The disabled bathroom project’s challenges

Underfloor pipes in disability bathroom renovation
We were asked to remove the client’s bath and replace with a shower and tray to accommodate her specific needs. There were a few issues we had to overcome, which became apparent as the project evolved. To start with, we had to re-run radiator pipes under the floor and reconfigure the water supply and drainage pipework. Initially, we were only going to remove the tiles in the area of the bath, however the client then decided to remove all the tiles in the bathroom and replace with white tiles, which gave a nice sleek look. We also found that after plastering and re-tiling, the slider we’d quoted for (Simpsons Elite 1700mm) wouldn’t fit, so we had to find another with a different adjustment.

Bathroom installation considerations

Fiora shower tray in new disability bathroom
As with any bathroom design and installation, there are many things to consider to ensure the end results meet the customer’s requirements. With this particular project, we had to make sure the bathroom met the client’s needs as an elderly and disabled lady and would continue to do so over the coming years. For ease of access, we used a sliding shower door, so it wouldn’t protrude into the room and cause an obstruction and potential hazard. The walk-in shower needed a level-access shower tray and we made sure the drawers on the basin unit were easy to use too. We also had to consider the location of the seat within the shower, as well as the grab bars.

Materials used to replace the bath with a shower

Disability shower seat and grab bars in walk in shower area
We used the Fiora Silex Black slim shower tray, which was made to measure to fit the space. While Fiora do supply a 1700×700 shower tray specifically designed for replacing baths, this standard size wouldn’t fit for this particular bathroom installation. We used the Prestige 1700mm sliding door and a chrome-finished shower column from Vado, along with a Cassellie Bali Ash white unit and shower seat. To complement the black level-access shower tray, white suite and tiles, we finished the bathroom off with Karndean Opus flooring.
Easy access disability shower area with glass sliding door
Room H2o bathroom installer, Steve, sums up the project: “We removed the bath, toilet, flooring and all the tiles. We prepared the walls for plastering and tiling, installed the shower screen and vanity unit and painted the ceiling. In total, it took three weeks to replace the bath with a shower and complete the bathroom installation.”
The outcome is the client now has a highly functional and stylish bathroom that will continue to work for her in the years to come. The total cost of the bathroom installation was £8,000. Any customers who are registered disabled don’t have to pay VAT, which gives significant savings on bespoke disability bathrooms.
