2019 Interior Design Trends

As we welcome in a new year, we also embrace a world of new interior design trends. In 2019, we’ll be seeing exciting developments in colours, styles, fixtures, fittings and gadgets. Here we take a look at the themes and innovations that are going to be emerging at the top of bathroom design trends over the coming months.

Destination: Luxury

Luxury freestanding bathtub with walk in shower

One of the hottest bathroom design trends for this year will be the ‘destination’ bath. Taking luxury to a whole new level, the freestanding bathtub is evolving into its own haven of tranquillity. With clever positioning and accessories, the destination bathtub turns bathing into a significant event.

Warm and welcoming

Bringing nature into the home has long been a popular interior design trend. While bathrooms can often feel cold and clinical, wood injects a sense of warmth and comfort. Wooden vanities and accessories aren’t a new idea, but this year’s designs will embrace reclaimed and light wood, with clear stains highlighting the beautiful detailing of the knots and grains.

The industrial vibe

Exposed hardware and piping are on-trend, with pewter and gunmetal tones giving fixtures texture and depth. Refined concrete has been drumming up a lot of interest at design shows, for a softer take on what can been seen as a cold and stark bathroom design trend.

“Exposed hardware and piping is coming into the bathroom in a very beautiful way. We used to see it a lot in older and antique homes, but it has come back in a more clean-lined and sleek way.”

Sleek showers

When it comes to shower enclosures, it’s all about style and function for 2019’s must-have bathroom designs. Sitting perfectly within the industrial look and, in fact, any contemporary theme, is the grid design shower frame. Matte black grid showers, like those from the Drench FRAME range, will be sought-after. Giving a more modern, urban feel than plain glass, the grid shower brings a new dimension to the bathroom and made-to-measure options make this style accessible for any space.

Mediterranean inspiration

Tile trends will be drawing on influences from Moroccan and Spanish designs and colours, for both walls and floors. We’ll see creative feature walls and splashbacks, as well as stunning flooring designs used to create fabulous temples of indulgence.

“The Moroccan-patterned tile has been a popular choice for kitchen splashbacks and fireplace surrounds for years now. Increasingly, though, it’s showing up in large swathes as bathroom flooring. You get the feel of tile with all the colour and style of a bold rug.”

Houzz

Chic colours and patterns

Colour will certainly be trending this year, with warm greys, blues, greens, dusky pinks and a subtler take on the classic black and white. But we’ll also see earthier tones, such as chocolate brown – a stylish option for those who prefer a more neutral palette. This year will see the continued popularity of patterned tiles, which may be reflective of 2019’s renewed focus on artisanship and craftsmanship. From tiles that catch the light to reveal a subtle pattern, to bold geometrics and intricate designs pieced together using a variety of colourful tiles.

Innovative technology

Smart shower controlled by mobile phone

Bathroom fixtures are evolving to offer far more than just practicality. ‘Smart showers’ allow you to see the exact temperature of the water, set various timings and flow types, and create personalised messages. And, as the perfect complement to the ‘destination’ bathtub mentioned earlier, we’ll even see electric fireplace inserts for the ultimate pampering experience.
